Female candidates may be poised for a better-than-average general election season this year after women walked away with some of the top wins in this week’s primaries, experts who study women in politics say.

Women candidates won in key states Tuesday, including in South Carolina, where Republican state lawmaker Nikki Haley advanced to a runoff for governor despite allegations of infidelity, and in California, where two wealthy businesswomen won GOP nominations for governor and Senate. That’s what several major polls have found recently, flying in the face of all conventional wisdom about Republicans being poised to win many House seats and make a run at taking back the majority this November.

Public Policy Polling finds on Friday that Democrats have a 46%-43% advantage over Republicans in generic “which party will you vote for?” House ballot polling. (650 voters robo-polled June 4-7.)

This after ABC/Washington Post found Democrats at a 47%-44% advantage (1,004 adults live-interview polled June 3-6.)

And after Gallup found Democrats and republicans tied at 46% (average for polling in the week ending June 6). Economist/YouGov, meanwhile, finds Democrats ahead 45%-44% (carefully sampled online poll of 1,000, May 29-June 1.)

Primaries in 11 states are over. In recent weeks several articles have attacked particular voices and groups unabashedly supporting the “pro-life feminism” of candidates such as California GOP Senate primary winner Carly Fiorina.

Even Ms. magaazine’s blog gets in on the action with an entry titled,  “Sarah Palin is Not a Feminist.” The articles I’ve seen are packed with lots of ad feminam shots at Governor Palin and the organization I oversee as president, the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, and then there’s some harrumphing over the perceived lack of gratitude shown to the feminist foremothers of the 1960s, and lists, lots of lists. Read the rest of this entry »

There have been various news accounts about my role in fundraising for the Independent Party of Oregon’s upcoming statewide election. The stories include excerpts from recordings of conversations secretly taped by a Democratic state senator and a Senate Democratic staffer in which I asked candidates to help defray the cost of holding a full and fair Internet election. I made mistakes.

My rationale for asking these candidates to donate was simple and maybe too naive: I thought that if a candidate was committed to an open process and seeking nomination from thousands of voters, then he or she might have an interest in helping the process — making sure the election is held by an experienced Internet voting firm, that all party members receive mail notice of their secure log-on codes, and that the results are certified as unimpeachable and fair. President Barack Obama campaigned as a man who would change the culture of privilege in Washington. In truth, he could do no such thing. He has known nothing in his adult life but politics and entitlement. His only jobs outside of elective office were public sector or education, dependent on tuition and public funding, and beholden to those who dish it out.

Distancing himself from these latest breaches of ethics (even as he involved a former president), and having staff issue half-baked denials that the president knew about the Andrew Romanoff offer, are more examples of his political skills. Read the rest of this entry »
